I had the distinct honor of attending a luncheon where Rep. Paul Ryan spoke about the impending financial crisis our country is facing.  Prior to this event I only knew Ryan from his interviews with Fox News anchors like Greta Van Susteren and Sean Hannity.  He always seemed to me to be a very plainspoken man with genuine concern for this country.

I didn’t know how right I was.  Paul Ryan is the real deal.  Here is a man who doesn’t think of himself first, he is a man who puts God and country above all.

As I listened to him speak there was no political double-talk, no parsing of words or talking in circles.  He was straightforward and honest.  How long has it been since someone has really spoken from the heart and soul with no vision of political gain?  Sarah Palin had that moment when she was chosen as John McCain’s running mate, but unfortunately the media tore her apart and branded her as stupid and unqualified.

This luncheon was way before Ryan was chosen as the VP for the Republican ticket and when questioned about it, he would only say that he would be honored, but he was very content to work in the House and fight for the American people.  That day he was just a Congressman doing his best to explain to all of us about the fiscal cliff we were heading towards.

Ryan has passion; he connects with the American people on a level that hasn’t been seen since Ronald Reagan.  I think that is why the Democrats and Obama are scared to death of him.  They know that his simple explanations and great knowledge of our economic problems is unsurpassed by anyone else in Washington.  He knows what he is talking about and he tells it to us in plain, honest terms.

When Obama makes these great sweeping speeches with the help of his teleprompter, we come away thinking, “What did he say”?  I have yet to be inspired by anything that he has said.  Instead, after listening to his words I am chilled and frightened.

We need someone like Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, someone who truly inspires us and doesn’t just tell us what we want to hear.  We need to believe once again that not all politicians in Washington are crooks like Charlie Rangel or Duke Cunningham, both amazing examples of greed and corruption.  The American people are frantically searching for someone that is real and genuine and, dare I say it, honest?

The left wants to paint all of us as trying to return to the 1950’s.  That is the mantra for this year’s Republican ticket.  Everywhere I look some media outlet is describing Romney and Ryan as two out of touch “white guys” that look like they came out of a bygone era.  Their talking points continue to drill into everyone’s heads that the Republicans hate women and want to take away all of their rights to birth control and abortion.  Even the independent thinking Democrats don’t believe that.

Maybe we do want a little bit of the 50’s.  Not the suppression and prejudice that we came to see as wrong, but the honesty and integrity that was in the hearts and minds of most Americans.  The work ethic and the desire to succeed; the wish that your children would inherit a better life than you had; the pride in your country and flag; these are the things that we want to bring back.

Paul Ryan is the man of the moment.  He strengthens the Presidential ticket and a better choice could not have been made.  You can truly say of Paul Ryan, he “does the right thing, even when no one is looking”.
